The Support Compass
Being there for a young athlete is more than showing up. It's knowing what to say, and when to simply listen.
After a Tough Loss
When they lose
- Don't ask "What happened?" — ask "How are you feeling?"
- Validate their emotions before offering solutions.
- Avoid comparing their loss to others' wins.
- Give them space to process, not a pep talk in the parking lot.
When Pressure Builds
Recognizing the weight
- Watch for signs: withdrawal, loss of joy, constant self-criticism.
- Separate their identity from their performance — they are not their stats.
- Ask what they need instead of assuming.
- Model vulnerability — share your own struggles openly.
Supporting Recovery
When they come back
- Celebrate effort, not just outcomes.
- Redefine "tough" — it's honesty, not silence.
- Create rituals for reflection, not just competition.
- Know when to suggest professional support — it's a sign of strength.
Pre-Match Mental Workout
15–20 minutes · For junior tennis athletes · The goal isn't to get "pumped up." The goal is to arrive at the first point calm, confident, and fully present.
Final Routine · 60 seconds
Stand tall.
Take one deep breath.
Smile.
"Today I compete."
"I accept adversity."
"Every point is a new opportunity."
"Let's go."
Walk onto the court.
The Champion's Mindset
Before every match, remember these truths:
I cannot control
- —My opponent
- —The score
- —Line calls
- —The weather
- —What coaches think
I can control
- ✓My effort
- ✓My attitude
- ✓My breathing
- ✓My body language
- ✓My decision-making
- ✓My response to adversity
And that's enough.
